The Ripple Effect will be broadcast free-to-air on Channel 7 this coming Saturday immediately after the Dreamtime Game between Richmond and Essendon.

Produced by St Kilda Football Club in partnership with Dickson Films and VicHealth and led by St Kilda Indigenous Liaison Officer Nathan Lovett-Murray, the documentary delves into racism in Australia through the eyes of the nation’s most prominent and inspiring athletes of colour.

The Ripple Effect primarily centres around St Kilda legend and proud Noongar Nicky Winmar’s generation-defining stand against racism at Victoria Park in 1993, and features interviews with Lovett-Murray, Ben Long, Nova Peris, Josh Addo-Carr, Otis Hope Carey, Akec Makur Chuot, Bachar Houli and more.

The Ripple Effect will also be live-streamed on 7Plus and will then be available on-demand.

A condensed version of the documentary will be used alongside the affiliated education program Point + Be Proud, which aims to educate the next generation about the ongoing impacts of racism on Indigenous mental health and wellbeing.

Point + Be Proud will be delivered through schools and sporting organisations across Melbourne’s south.

“It’s a story that needs to be told,” Winmar said.

“I’m incredibly proud to continue the conversation of reconciliation through The Ripple Effect documentary, the Point + Be Proud program and the design of this year’s Indigenous Guernsey for Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Making that stand at Victoria Park all those years ago and seeing the impact it’s had is really moving for me, my family and my people.

– Nicky Winmar

“I hope this documentary has the power to create meaningful change between individuals and our country as a whole.

“While we’re all taking steps in the right direction, we still have such a long way to go until true reconciliation is reached.”
